Today I had to write a statement for my uni scholarship application and thought it might make an interesting read! So here you go...enjoy....
Personal Statement
Health and movement
Describe your vision for your intended degree in the next decade, and how you see yourself contributing to this vision, with reference to past achievements and future goals.
Vision in the next decade:Design and promote Romp:- a high energy kids program for schools empowering kids, parents and teachers to live healthy, active and sound lives teaching food fitness and wellbeing.
At a young age I always wanted to be a teacher, although whether that was a dance teacher or a school teacher, I wasn’t sure. After finishing school I deferred my offer to primary teaching to take a year off study and see what I could do with dance teaching. After completing this year and successfully establishing a performing arts school, I discovered I still had a desire to work in schools and teach kids not only dance as a skill but mentor and encourage the next generation to be all they can be. Although it wasn’t necessarily a ‘school teacher’ I wanted to be. So I then completed a year at Bible College to add some credibility to my role as Children’s Pastor, and see where that took me. Throughout this year I began to discover what it was I wanted to do:- Design and run a health program in schools. So I took the next year off study to work full time at a recreation and conference center and continue running the performing arts school but dedicated my spare time to market research and discovering what it was I needed to do to make my dream happen. And hence discovered that although I do not need a degree, having a degree in health and movement would carry a lot of weight.
At current I have started developing my program ‘Romp Australia.’ This program endeavors to teach kids how to live happy and healthy lives focusing on food, fitness and wellbeing. Up until now I have written part of the program, put together a small business plan, designed the website (www.rompaustralia.com -check it out), registered the business name and had a logo designed. My plan for this year is to trial the program in a few schools, get heaps of feedback, and go from there.
Romp Australia is a high energy kids program for Schools designed to meet syllabus requirements. Using innovative interactive games, dance and activities to empower the next generation to live healthy, active and sound lives. The program is three 1 hour adventures held over 3 weeks in a school, geared to empower kids in the areas of Food, Fitness and Wellbeing. All activities are designed to not just inform but demonstrate the power of healthy living, having an active lifestyle and encouraging positive life choices. Check out the website for more info on the program.
My vision for this program is to see it government recognized and used Australia wide and then eventually branch out to other countries. Apart from the program itself my vision is to impact the way the government views health and what we promote to the public and our young people. WHO states that “Health is a state of complete physical, mental and social well-being and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity." At current we are promoting that ‘looking’ healthy is great but not teaching or equipping people to get there properly. Yes in a sense we are, but are then completely contradicting that with the media and anti social activities the kids are exposed to. Being healthy is not an image and I believe that our kids through marketing, media, and internet social sites are being told that it is.
So in summary, the vision for my degree is to gain knowledge and add credibility to my future goals in the health industry. These goals being to design a health program for schools which is government recognized, write books and teaching material and have a lasting impact on how the government views the expenditure of funds on prevention rather than encouraging lifestyle diseases and then having to spend money on cure.
